One person died and three people suffered injuries in a crash involving at least five vehicles early Tuesday on Lakeville Highway, according to Petaluma police and fire officials.
Sonoma County’s emergency dispatchers began getting calls at 7:15 a.m. of the collisions on Lakeville Highway near South McDowell Boulevard and Browns Lane.
Within minutes Petaluma police issued an alert warning drivers to avoid the area as the crash was causing traffic delays and detours. Police recommended drivers take alternative routes.
A driver in the crash and witnesses to the aftermath described a sequence of collisions starting with a northbound pickup truck veering across lanes. The truck hit at least three vehicles and set off a series of other collisions as one vehicle was shoved into another.
“Cars were hitting and flying everywhere,” said Sonoma resident Suzana Weltken whose SUV had major damage after being hit by the pickup, then pushing her into another car.
John Bearce of American Canyon heard the crash. He’d just pulled into a Lakeville Highway business to offload his work truck. “It was loud. I looked over to my left and there was stuff flying everywhere.”
Petaluma firefighters and three ambulances responded. All of the patients were taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.
